Learning to Lean In at Inflection
May 13, 2013 - Redwood Shores, CA—Two years ago, a friend shared a TED talk with me. That was my first introduction to Sheryl Sandberg. Her advice to "sit at the table" and "not leave before you have to leave" in regards to career and parenthood planning were often important reminders to me as I grew at Inflection and especially after got engaged to my long-time boyfriend.

Search-Engine Marketing (SEM) at a Successful Silicon Valley Start-Up
May 01, 2013 - Redwood Shores, CA—When people ask me what I do at Inflection, the answer "SEM" usually elicits a quizzical look. SEM, or Search Engine Marketing deals with paid search results, which on Google are the search results that appear at the top and along the right of the page. We search engine marketers are given less than 100 characters in these digital advertising spaces to grab your attention, convince you of the superiority of our site, and drive you to click on our ad to provide you the answers to the universe ... or at least the solution you were looking for when you initiated your search.

Staying Balanced at Inflection
Apr 24, 2013 - Redwood Shores, CA—Life is a balancing act. We balance school, work, and relationships, all to make life pleasant. But staying balanced isn't just external; it also comes from within. One of the most important building blocks of homeostasis (a fancy word for...

You Don't Create Culture, You Protect It
Apr 18, 2013 - Redwood Shores, CA—It is now 5:30pm, and we're plodding north on the 101 towards San Francisco. Cars are moving slowly, clumping together then spreading apart like a caterpillar's crawl. The Santa Cruz Mountains are visible through the windows and the summer fog spills over their peaks. We're playing reggae and rap and songs from grade school on Spotify. Flora is talking rapidly while Pili and Natalie, who sit beside her in the back seat, listen quietly. I sit in the front and watch the passing cars.

Design Spotlight: Human-Centric Design for Our Future Selves
Apr 02, 2013 - Redwood Shores, CA—When we think about contemporary design, tech gadgetry, sleek household objects, and statuesque steel skyscrapers may automatically come to mind. For Inflection Product Design Lead Carina Ngai, the design process that intrigues her most is designing for our future selves, i.e., designing for aging populations. Carina believes that instead of focusing on design for disabilities like loss of vision, hearing, and memory (which frequently results in dumbed-down technology), innovation peaks when we begin to examine the relational and communal dimensions of aging populations, especially their inspirations, aspirations, values, and daily challenges.

Lucky Us
Mar 11, 2013 - Redwood Shores, CA—Exactly a year ago, I was a Computer Science senior at Harvard trying to pull off a party:graduate:get a job juggling act. A close friend of mine came up to me one not-so-special-and-probably-snowy day and urged me to look at Inflection's site. "Dude. Trust me. They do all that nerd stuff you rave about all day but they are also kind of hippie-ish like you." Curious to see what this mysterious company was all about, I showed up at the Harvard Startup fair to meet Matt Sundquist, who was recruiting for the 12412 program. He looked like a castaway, with a long beard and hair to boot. Incredibly warm and gregarious, Matt spoke Spanish to me like a native Argentinian, mixing conversations about the challenges of Internet privacy with thoughts on religion. We bantered about the intimacy of relationships and the perfect ratio of spiciness, cheese, and meat in a burrito.

Why Working From Home Works For Us: A Startup Success Story
Mar 04, 2013 - Redwood Shores, CA—Ever since Marissa Mayer's memo on Yahoo's new work-from-home policy leaked, the WFH debate has blown up on the blogosphere. Here at Inflection, we've got nothing but love for Marissa. As far as we can tell, Yahoo's in a better place: it's a big company seeking a turnaround, and we have no doubt that Marissa's decision reflects a deep understanding of what the company needs to do just that.

10 Lessons from Wisdom 2.0: A Twitter-Sized Ethnography
Feb 28, 2013 - Redwood Shores, CA—Last year I considered doing an ethnography of the Wisdom 2.0 conference for my master's thesis. Good thing I didn't. My views of Wisdom 2.0, an annual conference on the intersection of technology, business, and mindfulness, have changed radically after attending last week.

I'm Going Down to Lucky Town
Feb 04, 2013 - Redwood Shores, CA—It's no coincidence that the fortune cookie was invented in San Francisco. Our hills may not house the rollicking, devilish leprechauns of Irish lore, but I'd venture to say that San Francisco is a city of good fortune*. Just last September, Bloomberg Weekly named San Francisco the Best City to Live in America in 2012 and it's not difficult to see why. We boast some of the best restaurants, museums, views, cafes, and businesses in America. We know we have it pretty good here at Inflection, and we're only trying to make it better--13 people better, in fact. Ready or not, 13 college seniors are about to get real lucky (not THAT lucky).
