As a leader at Inflection, how do you inspire innovation and productivity on your team?
Every other Friday, two designers pair up to think of a design exercise to lead the rest of the designers for an hour. We’ve done fun exercises like “card sorting” to learn about our information architecture, as well as sketching sessions to come up with our personalized logos. This helps get our creative muscles warmed up, and powers us to produce innovative work.
Describe your role at Inflection.
My official title says I’m a ‘Director’. However, I think the most accurate title is ‘Facilitator’ or ‘Ambassador.’ I don’t really direct anyone, I give suggestions based on my observations and principles of design that I am familiar with. Then I ask people if they’ve tried this or thought about that. I think I am the most successful at my job when I become a sounding board for people to draw out good ideas that have been stewing within themselves, just below the surface.
What is something unique about Inflection’s culture that enables you to succeed both personally and professionally?
There are no boundaries between departments or teams. As a family, we all have various personalities, but know that we accept one another’s differences. Therefore, we share multitudes of knowledge and interests with each other. This only enhances me to become a better designer, and a better member of society.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Remember what you have to be grateful for. When I remember this, everything in life and work comes into perspective. With this in mind, most challenges I face tend to be insignificant in comparison to everything else happening in the world.
What does Jae’s team have to say?
“Jae is a font of knowledge for all things design. She is always willing to share her prowess and give constructive critiques that never fail to help strengthen the team’s designs. Working with Jae has and continues to be a boon for my development as a designer.”
